RANDOPH TO JOIN NORTH WEST JERSEY LEAGUE FOR 2015-16
RANDOLPH, NJ – In an effort to provide more competitive-match opportunities for developing wrestlers, the Randolph Recreation Wrestling program has joined the North West Jersey Midget Wrestling League beginning with the 2015-16 season. The North West Jersey league is comprised of 18 teams, who compete in a full ten-week schedule with 16 total matches plus a year-end tournament.
“We think the North West Jersey league is a great fit with our program’s mission, training our wrestlers to succeed at a progressively competitive level,” said program director Pat Glory. “We have evolved over the past few years, to a point where we have many kids who are past the novice stage, but aren’t quite ready for the Tri-County or Grade School leagues. In the North West Jersey league those kids will get more match experience, against good competition, and keep growing as wrestlers.”
Randolph will continue to have a multi-level program that competes in four leagues. The novice level will participate again in the King of the Mat league, with informal jamboree-style matches and a year-end tournament. At the JV level, the North West Jersey league will replace Future Stars. The varsity level enters its 49th year with the Tri-County league, while middle-school varsity wrestlers will also compete in the Grade School league encompassing all of northern and central New Jersey.
On the switch to North West Jersey from Future Stars, coach Tom Wysocki said that “although there were some definite benefits to Future Stars’ less structured format, we saw a need to get real match experience for more of our wrestlers, more often. The North West Jersey league has more activity, more structure, and in that way we think it’s better for our wrestlers’ progress.”
The program has posted a tentative schedule of matches, although dates and times are still likely to change over the next several weeks. The Rams begin practice the week of November 9. Also in early November, the program committee and coaches will host a start-of-season parent meeting to discuss the new league as well as other aspects of the program. Details of the meeting will be posted on randolphwrestling.com and in social media.
