NUTRITION FOR YOUNG WRESTLERS

When parents are considering wrestling as a possible sport for their kids, one of the biggest anxieties is nutrition and weight management.  However at this age, we believe our wrestlers' approach to nutrition should be very simple:   "In order to maintain the high energy levels I need for intense workouts and matches, I need to a eat healthy, balanced diet on a daily basis."

How young is too young to start strength training? And what specific weight-lifting exercises are appropriate at what age? For youth wrestlers and their parents, these are two commonly asked questions. The answers, however, depend upon a variety of factors beyond just a wrestler’s age.

CONCUSSION SAFETY

When most people think of concussions in kids' sports, football usually comes to mind -- certainly it's been a topic in the news. Not many new wrestlers or parents realize that concussions sometimes occur in wrestling as well.  Concussions are not always caused by direct blows to the head.  They sometimes happen because of quick, jarring movements, like being thrown to the mat.

HYGIENE & SKIN CONDITIONS

Significant attention has been focused on skin diseases and prevention, especially in the sport
of wrestling. Wrestling is a contact sport, and the sport's skin-to-skin nature makes it fertile 
ground for skin diseases.  However, wrestling is also probably the most pro-active about hygiene, 
since preventing a skin condition is much easier than treating one.
